I’m thinking of changing my major and I know if I want to get in I have to start applying next fall during the portfolio season. I’m not sure if I want to try 2-d or 3-d or both. Probably both since 3-d is the way we’re going but I like 2-d cartoons better myself.
I live in upstate new york but I’m willing to try anywhere in America if it’s good.
Right now I’m looking at pratt ny, mass art and design, ringling in fl.
I like Pratt and Mass Art. Mass Art is stronger for animation than Pratt, although both are good art schools.
Add SVA to your list. It’s in NYC, like Pratt, but is stronger for animation than Pratt is. Parsons may also be worth looking at.
For animation, I’d also have you look at RISD, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Arts, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, UCLA, Rensselaer Polytechnic, NYU, UC San Diego, and Art Center College of Design.
I’d use Ringling as your backup school. The others on this list are stronger.
As for which you want to do: 3D or 2D – that’s up to you. I know it looks like 3D is taking over the planet, but in reality… not really. Most of the animation done for TV, for example, is all 2D. 2D v. 3D animation – what’s popular varies, depending on the time period. 3D in film is popular now, but in 5 years? Who knows?
It’d be great if you can do both, but if you must choose, go with your heart and your interests. But explore both during your first year, and see which one interests you the most.
Schools that are good art schools, which are upstate if you’re interested, are RPI, which I mentioned, as well as Syracuse and RIT. SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Purchase may also be options, although I don’t know their animation departments (if they even have them!), but they are decent art schools, and SUNYs, so for you, relatively cheap. Hunter College, which is a CUNY, is also good for the arts, and as a CUNY, for you, cheap.
Also check out the Cooper Union. I don’t remember if they offer animation, but as an overall art school, they rock, and they are free if you can get in. Free.
Have you been to a portfolio day yet? Maybe something you can do this fall, if interested:

I am 14 and have wanted to be a animator since I was 7. I practice my drawing/animation skills almost every day for hours. I sketch, look up tutorials, read about other animators, make animated gif, play around on 3d programs and such. I was wondering if there is anything else I should be doing to maximize my learning and prepare me for when I am older. Also what would be a good animation college to look into?
depends on where you live Otis college of art and design has a good animation program. but you should also build a portfolio and attend one of the national portfolio days i your area there will be representatives there from various art colleges and you can get better information from them

The seminar that I conducted for Mahindra College of Engineering, Salem, on 24th July 2009 in response to their invitation, was a resounding success. It helped the students to understand the nuances of animation techniques and technology. It also served to inspire them for a career in animation.
After interacting with the students in depth, I found a lot of creativity in them awaiting the right channels for expression. Given the proper guidance and training, this fresh group of talented individuals can be groomed for a successful career in animation that can attract many international and national industries.
I was born and parented in Chennai Santhome, a place celebrated world over as the Detroit of Asia. My father, an illustrious artist had designed many commendable Indian Postal Stamps and logos for companies of national repute like Nirma, Pilot Pen to name a few. Little did I know then, that his passion for art was infectious and I will be its immediate victim and inspire me to become a full-fledged Animator. His care and guidance fetched me many rewards in art competitions held in various Schools and Colleges.
Today my efforts have been profoundly honored at Mahindra Satyam Computers as I am bestowed with the responsibility of Creative Head and Heading the Graphic Asset Management team for e-Learning division.

This tutorial discusses important principles that are germane to your success as an artist. You are unique. Your point of view of the world around you is also unique.
Schools and colleges have a cookie-cutter mentality and require conformity to rules, so learn the rules and move on. As your artistic nature matures, you will want to find your own way of expressing yourself, and even though animation encourages each of us to follow a model sheet, your take on it will always be different.
The expressions and body language will be uniquely yours. To make your drawings substantive is the goal; Drawings are symbols that witness who you are. Let me teach you how to achieve this.

Two films I made in the past two months for my portfolio to animation colleges (CALARTS!!)
KARMA deals with a hunter who has shot a bear.
(if you don’t know what’s going on, it’s not your fault, my storytelling is not that great…)
RUNNING BOY is just a pencil test that grew into a bigger project. Includes super cheesy accordion music! I like this one better.
(UPDATE: I got in to Calarts!!)

Avery Centre is a 1400-acre planned unit development in northeast Round Rock. It includes plans for a town center, which will be located near the intersection of FM 1460, or AW Grimes, and County Road 112.
The Avery family, whose ancestors have owned land in Round Rock for more than 100 years, hired Waterstone Development to manage and plan this large-scale project. The Averys previously worked with the CEO of Waterstone Development, Bob Wunsch, to develop Avery Ranch, an 1800 acre residential community in north Austin between Round Rock and Cedar Park.
The master plan for Avery Centre is a New Urban design featuring a mix of retail, residential and commercial development. The pedestrian-friendly design will cater to walkers and bikers–those attending universities and colleges such as Texas State University, Austin Community College and the Texas A&M Health Science Center.
Seton Medical Center Williamson also exists at Avery Centre today, with complementary development planned for the site. For example, a privately owned medical office building will be built just south of the hospital. A book store, coffee shop and sandwich shop is planned near the college campuses to serve students.
The development is expected to be fully built out by 2018.

I’m gonna be a senior in high school this year and need to get my butt in gear looking at colleges! I intend to major in animation, so I want to find the best college and animation program that I can. If possible, it would be nice to stay relatively close to Ohio, but that isn’t my number one priority…
So what is your opinion? Does anyone maybe have experience in an animation program at a certain college that they can vouch for? Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated!
SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) has one of the top three animation programs in the country.
Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, has what is considered the best animation program in the country.
