I am decent at drawing. I am thinking of going to an art institute. I know you have to submit a portfolio. I am wondering if they ever look at someone’s portfolio and say "Uh, you’re not good enough."

they might turn you down, yes. I have seen it happen.
It depends on which school you want. Some are hard to get into, some are really easy. You have to do research on this.

Before you worry about it, you have to ask each school you are interested in what they are looking for in the portfolio. You might find that some of them might give you a test instead of taking a portfolio. Better check up on that.

Another thing you can do is actually ask one of the teachers or someone at the school you like to look at your art and have them tell you directly how good your chances are. Don’t forget to try that.

I’m planning on moving to California to go to an Art Institute to finish my Animation Degree. However, theres quite a few schools and I’m not familiar with the areas. I was thinking San Diego, but San Francisco and Los Angeles are also choices. I like living near cities with lots of culture and places to explore, someplace near the beaches or an artsy area. Anyone with experience living in these areas offer any help?

San Francisco Art Institute of CA is located in South of Market, near the finanical district (downtown). Easier to find a part-tim job while going to school. Area surrounded by stores, clubs, business buildings, corporationsns, ect. Also Lots of rental condos and lofts nearby the school.

I don’t know what to think about the art institute of pittsburgh! I want to go there really bad. Im just not sure. Anyone have an opinion on this school?

I actually just got off the phone with someone from the Arts Institute of
Pittsburgh to talk about their Web Design Program. I was not real happy to find out it would cost me $20,000 just to get a diploma in Web Design! That’s just for a diploma!
I can go to my local community college and get a Web Diploma for about $7,000. A huge difference.
While I think it’s a good school, you can take classes elsewhere a lot cheaper.

Do you want to go broke taking out student loans?

Perhaps it’s a good idea to find a school that offers what you want at the cost you can afford. Also do not feel rushed into a quick sale with any school. Let them know you want to think about it. If they try to sign you up without giving you time then you know it’s a scam.

Do a search on Culinary Arts and you will come up with a lot of options. Find a school that specializes just in the Culinary Arts and you will probably get a better deal. I’m not saying not to go with AIP but be sure to give yourself time to think about all the pros and cons.
