What are some awesome art universities?

I am interested in pursuing a career in the graphic arts. I want to carry around a laptop the whole school day without being forced to put it up. I’m looking at colleges in advance (I’ll be a sophmore next year) because I know how compeditive things are. My GPA is about 3.0.
I’ve seen one college whose style I like in particular, its called Full Sail University. Does anyone who goes there have any opinions?

evergreen university, in Olympia, Washington is one of the top art universities in the country.
i live in Olympia and let me tell you, there are greeners (thats what they are known as) EVERYWHERE and let me tell you they are very interesting but so cool.
evergreen is a very laidback school too.
i think that going to evergreen would be an unforgettable experience and you’d get a lot out of it.
plus the olympia area is a very fun place to live, there really isn’t a boring day, the weather is also nice ofcourse we do get alot of rain but you get used to it and our summers have perfect weather.
and washington landscape is beautiful too. we care a lot about the environment.

hope i helped. =]

Hull Fine Art Protest 2003

On Friday the 15th of November 2003, students of Hull’s Fine Art course (University of Lincoln!?!) staged a surprise walk out and media assault on the Universities management. BBC Look North were present to report the protest.

The management, here represented by Vincent Shacklock (Hatchet Henchman No2, Hatchet Man No 1, David Chiddick was not present. It is worth noting that this crew of corporate scoundrels had been employed to slash away the chaff at De Montfort previously) had no idea that a band had begun playing, banners had been hastily erected and the BBC were all outside waiting for the students to make their grievances known and to leave the meeting.

The meeting had been called by the management to ‘explain’ to the students why their course was being slashed in both budget and staff so dramatically.

The real story, as the students recognised at the time, was that the University of Lincoln was running its operations in Hull into the ground, selling off its real estate, and ploughing the proceeds into extensive building works and expansion of its Headquarters in Lincoln.

In the film you can see corporate puppets Jane Bingham and Vincent Shacklock attempting to prevent a young student from filming the proceedings. Other Cameras had already been switched off due to their protestations. They were being very careful not to let any of their empty promises leave the building in any form of documentation, that they could later be held to account by.

The protest ultimately failed as less than two years later Hull’s Fine Art degree course no longer existed.
However in an effort to repair the damage done by the students guerilla tactics, the management did have to fork out a small fortune in a poster campaign swearing its allegiance to Hull.

Hull’s Fine Art course represented one of the last in the country to resist modularisation, and encourage free experimentation from its students across disciplines etc. Its passing has had a notable negative effect on Hull’s cultural life, and has driven its most interesting culture underground.

Do these universities have good art departments?

Do universities like UCLA or Stanford which are strong academically in humanities and social sciences have good art programs? Good meaning pretty high standards. I know about art universities like RISD etc but because I’m not from the States, I wasn’t sure about this. Thanks!!

Stanford? It’s just okay. But UCLA? That’s one of the strongest art schools in the US. They’d be an excellent choice.

Other top-ranked universities that have strong art departments include: Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Indiana U Bloomington, U Wisconsin Madison, Columbia U, U Illinois Urbana, U Texas Austin, Washington U in St. Louis, Bard College, U Penn, U Michigan Ann Arbor, NYU, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cornell. Others that are quite strong include UC Davis, Rutgers New Brunswick, Syracuse. All are strong both academically, as well as in art.

You can also look at RISD if you want to. RISD offers joint degrees with Brown University, which is right across the street. Another school to look at that works like that is Tufts U, via their dual degrees with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Again, very strong academically, and if you do the dual degree, also very strong in art.
