Hull Fine Art Protest 2003 |
On Friday the 15th of November 2003, students of Hull’s Fine Art course (University of Lincoln!?!) staged a surprise walk out and media assault on the Universities management. BBC Look North were present to report the protest.
The management, here represented by Vincent Shacklock (Hatchet Henchman No2, Hatchet Man No 1, David Chiddick was not present. It is worth noting that this crew of corporate scoundrels had been employed to slash away the chaff at De Montfort previously) had no idea that a band had begun playing, banners had been hastily erected and the BBC were all outside waiting for the students to make their grievances known and to leave the meeting.
The meeting had been called by the management to ‘explain’ to the students why their course was being slashed in both budget and staff so dramatically.
The real story, as the students recognised at the time, was that the University of Lincoln was running its operations in Hull into the ground, selling off its real estate, and ploughing the proceeds into extensive building works and expansion of its Headquarters in Lincoln.
In the film you can see corporate puppets Jane Bingham and Vincent Shacklock attempting to prevent a young student from filming the proceedings. Other Cameras had already been switched off due to their protestations. They were being very careful not to let any of their empty promises leave the building in any form of documentation, that they could later be held to account by.
The protest ultimately failed as less than two years later Hull’s Fine Art degree course no longer existed.
However in an effort to repair the damage done by the students guerilla tactics, the management did have to fork out a small fortune in a poster campaign swearing its allegiance to Hull.
Hull’s Fine Art course represented one of the last in the country to resist modularisation, and encourage free experimentation from its students across disciplines etc. Its passing has had a notable negative effect on Hull’s cultural life, and has driven its most interesting culture underground.
